Admission Criteria
To be eligible for admission to Griffith University, you need to satisfy any admission requirements for a program of study. In Queensland the admission score for a program is expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or selection rank. There can be additional admission requirements or selection criteria for programs including:
- English language proficiency – meeting a minimum standard of English language competency.
- Minimum age – minimum age requirements for applicants at the time they would commence their studies.
- Subject prerequisites – completion of compulsory subject matter.
- Special selection criteria – performance in an audition, submission of a portfolio, level of attainment in a specialised test, interview or questionnaire.
Subject prerequisites and assumed knowledge
Griffith operates in an assumed knowledge framework. Most of our degrees assume you have studied certain subjects at school (or equivalent studies) and that you’ll be able to build on this knowledge at university.

These programs include the Bachelor of Education and all Laws (Honours), including dual degrees.
MATHEMATICS
A range of Griffith programs have mathematics as Assumed Knowledge. This is indicated in the admission criteria. These programs include Engineering (Honours) and Software Engineering (Honours). Some degrees still require a General mathematics as either a prerequisite or as a ‘one of’ a combination These programs are the Bachelor of Education which requires a ‘General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (Units 3&4, C)’, or the Bachelor of Paramedicine which requires ‘One of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C)’.

If you have completed the armed services general training and at least twelve months’ service, you will be awarded a selection rank making you eligible for a range of Griffith degrees. Griffith University is developing opportunities to reach your full potential through education with a newly formed Veterans Student Success Program. For more information visit Veterans.
If you are a current Year 12 student applying to Griffith, you will be considered for admission on the basis of merit (expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and whether you meet the admission criteria (such as subject prerequisites).
If you are a current Queensland or interstate Year 12 student who does not qualify for an ATAR, you may be considered on the basis of a completed vocational education and training (VET) qualification such as Certificate III or above, as Griffith University accepts standalone VET completed at school for Year 12s to meet rank. You must also meet any subject prerequisites for admission and any other selection criteria. A completed AQF diploma will meet English subject prerequisites. To find out more, visit VET Pathways to Griffith.
If you are a current International Baccalaureate (IB) student applying to Griffith, you are assigned a selection rank based on your completed IB Diploma. This selection rank is expressed on the same scale as the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank).
Griffith University recognises that some IB students will experience circumstances that prevents them from being awarded the Diploma and offers an IB Safety Net. This means that if for some reason you do not complete your IB Diploma you will be able to apply to QTAC for a place at Griffith and be assessed based on the study that you have completed. You don’t need to apply separately for the Safety Net, as you will automatically be considered when you apply to QTAC. Any eligible adjustments will also be applied to your rank. For more information, visit International Baccalaureate.
Results from home schooling, Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) and other non-standard Year 12 programs (with SAT tests) may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional admission requirements (see below). Contact Griffith University for more information.
Applicants with Overseas Year 12 Study
Griffith University will consider equivalent overseas Year 12 qualifications for admission purposes. Contact Griffith for more information. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

Examples include Performing Arts, Dance and Music qualifications such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) qualifications.
If you have a number of different qualifications for which selection ranks can be assigned, normally the highest will be used for admission. Make sure you check the closing dates carefully, as these vary between scholarships. Most scholarships are open mid-July for study in 2024.
Student support services
Students can access careers, counselling, health, welfare and chaplaincy services on campus. Customised support is available for students from diverse backgrounds, and for students with disabilities. Visit the Griffith website for more information about student support. Learning support services are available through the library on all campuses. International students should visit our website for information on applying to study at Griffith.
Career Advice
Our Careers and Employment team offers a range of services to help students plan their career and find work. For more information visit Careers and Employment Service.
Student accommodation
On-campus student accommodation is available at the Nathan campus, and at the Gold Coast campus through Campus Living Villages. Visit On campus (griffith.edu.au). We can also help you find a place to call home through our preferred accommodation partners. Find out more about accommodation.
Work integrated learning
Work-integrated learning is embedded in many of our programs, which means you may need to complete a work placement as part of your degree. However, we also have a range of additional WIL opportunities open to all students. Work-integrated learning experiences allow you to put what you’ve learned in the classroom into practice. Through work placements, internships and projects, you can expand your network and your horizons, as well as gain credit towards your degree.
